Holiday in Algarve - which resort?

Hi,
I booked flights to faro today for my husband and I and our one year old daughter. We are flying out in mid May for a couple of weeks. Can anyone recommend a nice resort not too far away from here? There are so many resorts in the algarve it is hard to know where to pick unless you have been there. I was thinking of booking a self catering apartment with alpharooms.ie - basic, clean, safe, near to beach and facilities. Am I asking for too much?!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Bernie

Have you considered Alvor? Old fishing village that has managed to avoid having high rise developments all over the place (apart from a few tower blocks near the beach that date back to the 1970s). No night clubs and very family friendly with a great beach. Look it up on tripadvisor and see what you think.

I'm a bit biased because I've been going there for years and bought an apartment there recently. But don't let that put you off.

I spent many a Summer in a place called Vilar do Golf ([broken link removed]) in The Algarve which is located in a resort called Quinta do Lago (www.quintadolago.com).

It's a great place and I highly recommend it.

I would second Alvor. Was there once about 3 years ago and loved it. Think it would be ideal for your circumstances. It is a bit of a drive from Faro though but definitely quieter and not as "resorty" as the other resorts!

I would suggest Vale de Parra. Lovely Area, Great beaches. Reasonable food and drink. Car hire would open a wonderfull holiday experience. I have been going there for years.

5 miles west of Albufeira.

Check it out.

I'd suggest Lagos, a nice mixture of modern and traditional. Good value too, and you can get there by train from Faro station. You'll need to get a taxi from the airport to the station though.

Or get the local bus for about €1. This takes you to the bus station. The train station is about 300 yds from the bus station. Train tickets to Lagos are about €6.50 from Faro. The train station in Lagos is about 500 yds from the main centre.

We stayed in a one bedroomed apartment in this complex but there are two beds also available. Less than ten minutes walk to the town centre with free internet across the road courtesy of the Portugeuse government.
