What does one have to do to be asked to step down as Minister?

Good old Willie O'Dee. He makes a false accusation against a candidate in an election which is illegal in itself. He signs an 'incorrect' affidavit that was submitted to the High Court and only changes it when he remembers that the conversation is on tape. He calls into question the integrity and professionalism of a journalist from a small regional newspaper. He then blames the Gardai for giving him the incorrect information.

And yet he claims he is a 'victim' in all this.

I believe gun running is the benchmark - though in no way will that affect your future electoral prospects.

Good point. Thank God we have the Greens in there now with their high moral standards is all I will say. They will always do the right thing.

Who was the last Minister to resign from office ? Michael Lowry, or Ray Burke ?

Willie O'Dea was filleted by Sean O'Rourke on RTE. In the real world, he'd be 'dead man walking' at this stage, but in Fianna Fail ..

He'll still top the poll down in Limerick next Election Day

That's why there's no pressure on him to step down.

Thats for election as a TD and is seperate. The people of Limerick don't decide for the rest of us who we want as Minister of Defence.

It is separate to some extent.

To be forced to resign you need to be expendable.

O'Dea isn't expendable because he effectively brings in 2 FF seats in Limerick East.

The last thing Cowen wants to do is force one of the biggest vote-getters in the country to resign against his wishes and potentially result in him standing as an independent in the next election.

I agree but that's where the Greens come in. If FF won't do the right thing for political reasons, then the Greens have to take to a stand or else they sign their own death warrant as a political party if they haven't done so already.

I think the Greens know that if they force a General Election then they are the ones who have the most to lose.

They could quite conceivably fail to get ANY seats in the next election. Of their 6 seats, 4 were won on the last count with another on the 8th count of 9. Trevor Sargeant is quite possibly the only one who will be re-elected in the next election.

They just seem to be hanging on in til the bitter end in 2012 in the hope of getting a couple more policies through the Dail before they bite the bullet.

Could be right but the Greens need to decide it if would be better to be out of Government now with some chance of survival as a party or out of Government in two years time and go the way of the PD's. As someone who lives in Trevor 'the Sprout' Seargents area, I will be doing everything in my power to make sure he doesn't get elected!

Well their chariman Dan Boyle reckons he should resign but it looks like the green TDs don't agree with him. Sounds like they want to have their cake and eat it.

A bit too much high moral ground here. What of his performance as a minister? Nearly every other minister has had serious issues from Finance to Education to Health etc. etc. But Defence has been admirable. When were we last attacked by a foreign power?

you must have forgotten his total lack of response to Henry's magic hand - France is still standing

Have you never seen the pictures of Willie all around Europe with the slogan

"come and have a go if you think you're hard enough"

It seems he has broken the mould and become the first senior minister to resign in recent times

"Resigned" is being kind. This particular type of joker was left in no doubt that the high jump was staring him in the face otherwise. The truest words he spoke in the past 24 hours were that he "also was a victim". Clairvoyance at it's best. But I feel sorry for the people of Limerick city who have seen social deprevation accelerate under his watch.
