Hi, I have a friend who has acknowledged that she needs some psychological help and she asked me to help her research how much it is, where she can go (lives in Drogheda) and also if there is any relief out there to help people who can’t afford a huge bill every fortnight or whatever amount of times she has to go. She is a single mother with a full time job though so I don’t know if she would be? Even to know how much a session costs, I know someone 2 years back that went to a lady in Dublin and she cost €80 a session but my friend say she couldn’t afford that twice a month but I am hoping with the recession and all that it may have come down a bit??

If she can apply for a medical card she can then be referred for free via her GP. Otherwise, some (not all) therapists offer a sliding scale of fees depending on ability to pay, its worth ringing around some in that area to ask.

She should also check with local groups such as St John of God and Aware to see what services or supports might be available.

HSE Mental Healh Clinics, Day Hospitals and Day Centres are located across the country. These are staffed by psychtrists, psychologist, addiction counsellor, psychiatric nurses, social workers, etc. Some accept self-referral, some may require a referral letter from a GP. These services are generally free, but there may be waiting lists. Ring in advance for an assessment appointment. Services for Louth - [broken link removed]

Thank you very much, that is very helpful. I will look into all of the above. thanks.
