Restoring VW Golf mk2 diesel 1991 which has been lying up for a few years.

Hi There,
I have a volwagon golf mk2 diesel 1991 which has been lying up for a few years. Was running reasonably well before it was parked. Drive shaft was gone thats the reason it was parked. As you can imaginge its looking a bit rough now.

Engine: is not bad, got the head done a few years before it was parked

Suspension: would not be great, I would suspect a lot of bushings bearings etc are gone.

Body: is in reasonably shape a few dints and bangs and missing a wing mirror.

Interior: Is a bit rough at this stage.

So I'm wondering what it would cost me to restore this car to a high standard. I'm not a mechanic but could do some basic things.

apreciate any advice before I make my decision.

Mk2 golfs are one of the most basic cars to work on. You would be fine if you buy the haynes manual and work through it nice and slowly.

Good luck with your project would be nice to see another mk2 back in action.

Obviously won't be as desirable as a gti if at all.

If you don't do the most of the work yourself I would say you are looking at a money pit.

Get some basic tools and have a go. Very satisfying when you do a job on the car yourself.

while the car may cost a small ammount of money in parts the mk2 golf is very simple and parts can be got for very little be they new or secondhand. Also with the way things are gone the diesel may be worth more than a gti soon as they are too expensive to run and tax
 
thanks guys, cankybear is the haynes manual good have you used it before.
I agree the mk2 is basic and i have done a lot of jobs on it myself in the past. I think I will make a start when the weather gets a bit better.

How much would i be loking at to get it re sprayed. If I get it to that stage :).
 
Haynes are common and 'ok' ish. Bentley manuals(publisher, not car marque) are much better & more detailed.
 
for the mk2 golf a haynes manual will do the job perfectly for the basic things you need to do. but dont be surprised if in the manual it says remove and you find yourself beating or prying the life out of something to remove it. lol

you will find that all you will really be doing on the car is the suspension and the brakes and the internals i would really reccomend letting a mechanic do the timing belts too as they are cheaper than a new engine.befire you begin anything i would get a screw driver andgently tap and poke at your sills though as these used to rot for sport and if they are shot you will be better scrapping it it the shell is solid good luck! and have fun
 
that sounds like a plan, I will check it to see how sound the shell is first. how dear is spraying it going to be I wonder

The REAL meaning of the Haynes instructions

Haynes: Rotate anticlockwise.

Haynes: Weekly checks...
Translation: If it isn't broken don't fix it!

Haynes: Routine maintenance...
Translation: If it isn't broken... it's about to be!

Haynes: One spanner rating (simple).
Translation: Your Mum could do this... so how did you manage to botch it up?

Haynes: Two spanner rating.
Translation: Now you may think that you can do this because two is a low, tiny, ikkle number... but you also thought that the wiring diagram was a map of the Tokyo underground (in fact that would have been more use to you).

Haynes: Three spanner rating (intermediate).
Translation: Make sure you won't need your car for a couple of days and that your AA cover includes Home Start.

HAYNES GUIDE TO TOOLS OF THE TRADE

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer is nowadays used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive parts not far from the object we are trying to hit.

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning steel Pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age, but it also works great for drilling mounting holes just above the brake line that goes to the rear wheel.

pique you just gave me the best laugh i've had in ages id seen the tools before but the haynes one was new love it!!
