Having just set down to return company VAT, I notice one of my purchase invoices are devoid of VAT.

The items on the invoice are for office furniture and machinery that were all purchased from a legitimate  company that were liquidating the items on behalf of a liquidator.

Is there a VAT element to such a transaction? It clearly states they are not charging VAT.

If they haven't charged you VAT then that is of no concern of yours. Is it the selling company that has the obligation to either charge VAT or not. Class it as a purchase with no VAT and do not include it in your bi monthly return.
