Hi There,

If someone currently is on JB, but shortly due to be means tested for JA and decides due to financial constraints moves back home with an elderly retired parent - will

a) the unemployed person be entitled to social welfare?
b) will the retired parent's state pension and benefits be affected eg, also be means tested and possibly lose their pension/OAP entitlements because their child has come back to live at home??

thanks a mil...

If the person moving home is aged 25 or over, then they will not be means-tested on the parent(s) income. The JA means test will be based solely on any means that the person themselves may have.

The parent(s) pension would not be affected. However if they are in receipt of the Household Benefits Package (TV licence, electricity, telephone rental), entitlement may be affected if they are under 70 years old. If they are over 70, then it isn't affected.

As the parent would not be living completely alone, they would no longer be entitled to a Living Alone Increase (€7.70 per week), if it’s the case that they are currently receiving it.
