What happens to shares when the shareholder dies?

I'm helping someone out in sorting out her late husband's financial affairs.

He owned some Irish Life & Permanent shares that he got as freebies on the demutualisation and some BES shares that he bought some years ago.

Anyone know how we go about getting the shares either transferred into his widow's name or sold?

Thanks.

1. You'll need Probate
2. You can then either contact the relevant companies or a stockbroker.

I have used Dolmen Stockbrokers - they have ( or at least did have) a Probate section and dealt with share transfers and sales. I found them very efficient and worth the reasonable fee.
