Health Insurance Waiting Periods query

I have family members considering a move back to Ireland after many years spent living abroad.
They have health insurance in Australia for 30 plus years, does that count in Ireland or would they have to serve the 5 year waiting period as new entrants?

Hi Ryan,

Unfortunately health insurance cover in any other country does not count in Ireland, regardless of how long they have it.
They would be treated as new customers and the 5 year waiting period only for pre-existing illnesses/conditions would apply before cover is allowed.
After the first six months on a new plan, any new illnesses or conditions are fully covered, no waiting applies.

However, if and when they actually return home to Ireland, if they take out any health insurance plan within 9 months of arriving in Ireland,
they will not have to pay any LCR loadings. This means a 2% loading charge added onto a policy for every year you are over 34 years of age.
The following link explains this in detail, questions 14 and 15 will apply to them.
