We are a couple in our late 50’s .. with 3 adult children, two have special needs and have medical cards.
We are currently on Plan 3713 for my husband & I and Plan 1211 for the 3 children ( aged 23, 21 & 19)
It’s costing a whopping €4,072 a year !
I’m wondering do we even need insurance cover for our two sons on medical cards? Any advice greatly appreciated .... renewal due 01/12.

Medical cards cover services by G.P's and access to public health services including public hospitals. Basically private health insurance allows members to " jump queues" and have access to private hospitals depending on your level of cover. I would think it all depends on whether you think your sons will need to access private services. I think if you are really sick you will get excellent care in the public service but if you want elective treatment and not join the waiting list you may need private cover.
