Valves & Thermostats

I have a gas central heating system (boiler 7yrs old) but the heating downstairs costs a fortune and is very bad.

I am getting quotes to have the system cleaned out and refilled with sealant to improve the quality of the heat - some rads downstairs are barely heating at all.

At the moment I have a room thermostat in the landing (the place in the house with the most draughts) so its useless.

I have a few questions:

1. Should I get a new room thermostat (or move the one I have) to turn off the boiler at a certain temp (what room, what temp, what kind?)

2. Should I get thermostatic rad valves on some or on all the rads - how to decide?

3. Is there anything else to think of when the rads are being cleaned out and new sealant is being put in.

thanks lads.
Dermot.
