My son is out of work for the last 6 weeks about. he doesnt want to sign on because he is too stubborn and doesnt want to on moral grounds. He gets by with odd jobs for the time being. I think he assumed that he would be back at work long before now. I have tried to tell him that he needs to sign on anyway for credits. is this correct?

What moral grounds would he have for not claiming his benefit entitlements which he has contributed to through PRSI? It's basically an insurance fund for eventualities such as your son is experiencing.

If he had a car accident would he not claim the insurance on moral grounds.

Are you as his mother supporting him through perhaps cheap or free bed & board. Does that fit with his high moral standards.
I've been in that position and decided some serious talking needed to be done bring him into the real world.

Next step down to SW with P45, Passport & proof of address and apply for Jobseekers Benefit

Good luck
