Tax Relief on PRSA Contributions

I contribute to a PRSA outside of my employment. In December 2008 I made a top up into the policy but due to some unforseen medical expenses if I submit this as part of my 2008 Tax Return I won't get the benefit of Tax relief at the higher rate on this contribution.

Is it allowable to hold off and include this contribution on my tax return for 2009 rather than 2008 even though it was paid in 2008 and therefore I could benefit from the higher rate of tax relief.

I understand it is possible to make a contribution in the next year and include on the tax return for the previous year but I'm unclear about paying in 2008 and including it on my 2009 return.

Thanks for all advice.
