social housing-advice

hi i'm living in co cork and have been on the housing list for a couple of years.i am currently living in rented accomodation.
every time i contact the council they just tell me that they dont know how long it will take for me to be housed.
i was just wondering if any one else is or has been in my situation,how did u get on and how long does it take??and is there any other advice u could give..please

I don't really know much about social housing except that someone I worked with got one a while back. She too had been on the list for ages. She spotted an empty place near where she lived and kept ringing the council saying 'what's the story with that place being left empty, I'd really like to live there'. That was a Dublin council and I guess she got lucky in the end. Priority seems to be given to people with children. Are there any agencies in your area that could help advocate for you?
