Should quotation for beam be itemised?

Hi folks,

Got a quote for removing a poured concrete wall at rear of the house and installing a steel beam to open kitchen into old small living room. House is 1950's terraced.

Quote just has a list of works & materials, but no costs per individual item. I was expecting to see these so I could understand what's driving the cost.

Have I got it wrong that it should be itemised?

Engineer will be designing the beam separately.

Thanks

Generally it'll only be itemised if you explicitly request it. But unless you're potentially looking at different suppliers to perform different part of the job, does it really make a difference in comparing quotes from different contractors?

Thanks for the response. I just wanted to ask before I went back looking for a detailed quote.

Had two more builders out today so hoping to have 3 different quotes for comparison.

Thanks

I presume you mean the engineer will give detailed instructions of the size and dimensions of the beam but the builder will buy it. Depending on the size I got an RSJ 6" x 6" about 4 metres in length for around 400 euro but my builder may have got trade price or was in the know as he is a friend. Of course your beam may be more specialised depending on what weight it needs to carry. When I googled mine I was seeing quotes of around 800 euro.

just for some other benchmarks, as part of a full extension our steel is costing (supplied with pads/bolt details etc and installed) €2,530 for a total of 10.5m in several separate areas (slightly differing sizes of beam) - so €240ish per linear metre. Steel only worked out at €1,600 (€152 per metre)

On smaller jobs most builders will just quote an all in price with a brief overall description of the works. As stated above ask for a detailed breakdown.
