Registering a mortgage charge

is it easy to register a mortgage charge ? I want to tfr a mortgage and was going to do it without the help of a solicitor (to avoid paying really). Is it possible for a lay person to do so? Whats required ?

If not, how much would one expect to pay a solicitor to do this ?

No - not possible. Lenders will not release funds without a Solicitors Undertaking to deal with the release of the first charge and creation of the second. Some lenders will cover some or all of the fees. Otherwise ring around solicitors in your area who will be delighted to quote you for the work.
