My wife and I hold about £12 000 (sterling) of Imp Tobacco (UK) shares which we have held for approx. 40 years. We hold certificates for these.
I have no idea how to sell or what tax to expect.
Any basic advice would be very helpful.
We do not want to deal again or to have to open an account if it can be avoided.

Hi sole

Due to the money laundering regulations, a stockbroker will not be able to sell your shares for you unless you open an account and provide identity. So you have to go through that process.

I use Campbell O'Connor who make no fuss about dealing in share certificates. camocon.ie

Maybe give them a call first to see if they can sell them without an account, but I doubt it.

The Registrars for Imperial Tobacco are Equiniti Limited [broken link removed] You could give them a call and ask them if they offer a share dealing service.

Thank you Brendan.
I did try Equiniti but they will not deal with non UK residents.
