OAP DIRT Exempotion Clarification

hi

i have read on this site and on some others that there is an exemption for over 65's on DIRT as long as their income isn't over a certain level eg 20k for single person. is this calculated on earned income or would the interest itself be part of the income being calculated.
any clarificationis much appreciated.
