My car insurance is due to be renewed in January 2010. I have just scrapped the car as it failed the NCT and would have cost three times its value to fix. Anyway, I'm now a named driver on my husbands policy and drive his car.

I rang the insurance company to cancel my insurance and the girl told me I would be best to pay it until January when its time to renew, as this means I will have another full years no claims bonus on my record, and if I cancel now when it is not a full year, I will loose this year.

Can anyone advise?

two things occur.

you will not incur this current year as a years NCB if you cancel before the year is up, that is before renewal date.

The other thing is, you might not get a huge refund anyway. Some companies have a minimum charge/refund and others charge an 'administration fee' for cancelling.

You could just suspend your policy (if your insurer allows it) which will mean your insurance will run until the end of the year but you will get a credit for each month you have suspended your policy.
