laid off from constructio job, going for heart bypass, options?

my father recently got laid off from his construction job.

he will be on the dole for a few weeks, then he is going for a heart bypass.

question is, he will first be on job seekers allowance, but when he has his bypass he will not be available for work, so id imagine different rules apply. i imagine there is a sick pay scheme?

When he gets the call for his operation, he should sign off Jobseeker's and make a claim for Illness Benefit (which is also PRSI-contribution based). The application form for Illness Ben is attached to a Social Welfare Medical Certificate which he can get from his GP.
