Is it necessary to use peat free compost for growing herbs, salads, etc
in a greenhouse or will any type of purchased compost suffice.

The main benefit of peat-free compost is that it doesn't involve the destruction of our bogs and wetlands.

Ethics aside, moss peat is also too acidic for many plants. Your local council may well give away or sell the compost resulting from the brown bins collections.

If your garden soil is reasonably good use that with a bit of sand if soil is heavy or clayish (about 1/5th), add a slow release fertilizer. Plants actually prefer soil as a growing medium. Compost or fine soil will do for seedlings. John Innes do a good range, and aren't too pricey.
