House Safe

I am looking to buy a safe for our house. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I just want something to hold checkbooks, passports, jewellery etc. I have seen cheap electronic ones in argos/diy shops, are these any good or would they be easy to open or take. Would a specialist locksmith shop be better? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to note that I bought one of these cheap safes for my parents. It was installed in a hotpress , bolted to the wall and fairly well hidden. Thieves found it and ripped it off the wall. Luckily nothing had yet been put in it and the thieves probably thought that they had gotten lucky. Can be useful as a decoy but not very much of a deterrent. A proper safe would have to be a) very large or b) buried in a wall or floor.

Hi,

I think if you are going to buy something like this you would be better off getting a fireproof version something like They do mention that it can be bolted but don't seem to supply same.

We have something similar but not bolted. They are very heavy to carry but I understand practically impossible to open.

You could try having a chat with some of the locksmiths. I've noticed a new locksmiths has opened recently in Capel St. if you are in Dublin and there are 2 others close by - one on the laneway just off Parliament St. and the other in Dame St.

We had a thread on this a long time back and some people recommended leaving valuable documents into the bank - some banks charge for this service.

Thanks,
I was going to anchor it very well, into solid wall. I know that thieves will try to take it with them if they can remove it. I was just wondering if those cheap ones were easy to break into. Sueellen, is your one from a locksmiths or a mass produced one like in Argos. If its not from a locksmith and it is 'practically impossible to open', then I will get one from there.

hi db,
I spoke to a lock smith last week about this and he said that the 'built in' safes are of a different higher specification to the 'stand alone' safes (such as argos). He aslo had floor safes which have to be built in as you are building the house. These safes are more expensive and have a longer lead time need expert installation. If I find out more Ill post it here.

Leave you valuables in your underpants drawer!

Buy a big old premium safe, possibly at auction. Fill it with nails, papers etc.

Park it under your stairs (not upstairs or they will demolish your stairs, throwing it down) or somewhere semi-obvious.

This safe will be removed from the house in the event of a theft, and hopefully leave less time for them to explore the rest of the house.

Even if it is only an oppurtunist pass-by break in, they will more than likely call in the transport troops.

Hi,

Ours is Sentry make also but I did not buy it from Argos or a locksmiths. A friend got it for us and I know it was definitely not either of these.

IMHO as Argos only do these on home delivery you would be better off sounding out maybe one or two [broken link removed] and see what they say/offer. Then make up your mind.

I see from the Argos catalogue that there is a smaller/cheaper version available The one above costs €299.99. Note the Argos catalogue is due to be replaced on 23rd July.

Thanks Sueellen, That smaller one in Argos looks like what I am looking for. I will wait for the new catalogue, sometimes they reduce the price :) or maybe they might have some new ones.
