fence with greenish colour in places?

I intend painting my wooden fence with fence life this year but it has patches that are green towards the bottom of the fence - what can i do with these to give them a bit more protection as they're very near the ground.?

You can add stone or gravel to the roting fences to protect them from moisture of soil.
