dependent relative tax relief

Hi, I've read several boards and several of the revenue leaflets but am still not sure of what can be claimed regarding a dependent relative.

My mother is over 65 years and retired, As she is finding it hard to survive on the pension alone I wish to give 25 euros a week to help pay bills, pay for clothes etc..
Could someone explain how the tax relief will work in this situation ?

Is there a limit to how much I can claim ?

thanks

Ok assuming you've read forms IT46 and IT1 . You'll see that you can claim the credit where you maintain/assist the relative and their income does not exceed the relevant limit. Fr 2009 that limit is €13,837. The tax credit is €80 ( Per IT1) In other words you can reduce your taxes by €80 for the year by claiming the relief. It's not a lot but worth claiming.

thanks Graham,

I thought that maybe there might be a tax break on the sum paid -
ie: 20% ( marginal rate) of 25 euros.

but by what you are saying this is not the case ?

On the 80 euro tax credit, is there a minimium/maximium that must be paid to the dependent before this credit can be claimed ?

thanks again
