Can anyone recommend where to buy nice and relayively cheap communion dresses, I'm assuming a cheap one to be around 150 euro .Am I correct in this estimation ?. I'm looking to buy in Dublin.
any advice greatly appreciated. Once again I'm not looking to spend a small fortune on a dress for one day.

Hi

Tommy's in Blanchardstown SC have a large range of Communion clothes. Don't know if they are cheap though.

Yes have had a look in Tommies , want to try somewhere else to compare though

hi

i also was faced with the task of buying a dress. i ended up buying in freckles in liffey st but all their dresses seem to be the one price 250 but i had looked in clearys and arnotts and they had some dresses starting at 195 euro but i have to say that seemed to be the cheapest i saw. i felt we got the personal touch in freckles, an assistant was with you all the time and let my daughter try anything she wanted and then went on to let her try head-dresses, shoes etc and it worked for us where you were a little on your own in other shops. hope this helps happy shopping.

Don't mean to offend any one (honest!) but whenever I pass Freckles in Liffey Street I marvel at how truly hideous the communion dresses are (Vera Duckworth meets a Billy Barry kid) and how hilarious the prices are.

Why doesn't any one go for a simple, classy, elegant communion dress for their daughters any more (one a dressmaker would make for a fraction of what you would pay in Freckles)?

They're not getting married, so there's no need to dress them in Jordan-like satin chandeliers. They're children!

my daughter is having her 1st communion in may. look on ebay. i bought one earlier this year for my daughter on ebay uk for £15 !. the dress is fantastic, and actually was made in ireland and i bought it from a lady in the isle of man. there isn't one mark on it. i would never dream of paying those amounts of money, rather spend it on a good party afterwards and so would my daughter ! she will probably wear it for a couple of hours, sling it into a corner, then change into her old jeans so she can have some fun.

Hi

Just today I bought a beautiful dress in Debenhams, simple but very pretty and feminine if you know what I mean.
My daughter loves it and it cost €96.

also check out the sales stock in monsoon, in the drogheda / scotch hall branch there are some beautiful cream dresses witha pink sash in the '70% off' sale rack, and a range of ages from 5/6 through to 8/9. I didn't see the price, as I was shopping for toddlers, but at 70% off, it could be well worth checking out!

hi

You could also try Adams childrenshop.
The branch in Limerick had some lovely white occasion dresses that went up to age 12 and started at about €50.

Theres a shop in Blessington Street, Dublin 7 and also one on Harts Corner that I know of, thats attached to a bridal shop.

Also a shop in Finglas Village where my sister bought a really pretty dress for my neice. She was freaked out by all the frills etc she saw elsewhere and looked everywhere for something quite plain but pretty and managed to get a nice one there.

Sorry I don't know the names of any of these shops but all are relatively easy to find. PM me if you want directions.

I hate when people use that sentence, because what follows is usually just that, anyway my sister bought a nice dress for her little girl in Adams, its not too expensive and they also have nice shoes. There is also " The sisters" in Tallaght Village.

Thanks for all those suggestions, I will have my wife on the trail next week. In my own opinion I think 250 for a communion dress is crazy but if that is the prize in rip of Ireland for these things what other option does one have. I like the idea of ebay myself , but I can't imagine my other half being gone on that idea.

Just to point out that I had reason to check the prices in Freckles also against a similar store in the UK. The prices in the store on liffey Street were on average approx. 40% more than the store in the UK.
Gone are the days we got our FHC dresses made from our mother's wedding dress!!!! :)
FYI - Dunnes Stores do great dresses for FHC, as do Adams. You might also consider seeing what the bridal shops have on sale at the moment in the way of Flower Girl dresses which are basically the same, you're just paying less for a different title.

don't forget to check prices for the limousine for the occasion !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - believe it or not this is happening. save your money on these over the top dresses and put it into a savings account for their future.

I reckon the only people who would be offended are those who dress their daughters up in the aforementioned Jordan-like satin chandeliers. Don't mean to offend any one......but they deserve to be offended :)

The ones with the [broken link removed] are particularly eye-catching.

:D ... ... :( ...

In other words, both the funniest and scariest pic I've ever seen. This post will be deleted if not edited immediately.

I believe it - Also include in your list of incredulous items for a 7 or 8 YO for their first holy communion:

Horse & cart
Spray on Tan
Sun bed sessions
Professional make up
Artificial Hair Extensions
Professional Hair "dos"
Personalised veils with personalised messages to GOD (I kid you not)

This is going on in many towns in Ireland and is pure repulsive. The commercialisation of the ceremony was summed up by this comment from a mother talking to her daughter I overheard in a Dublin FHC store lately:

"You don't want to pick that bag honey, it's too small. What about this one, it's far bigger and you can get more money into it."

Surely not for communion????????????????? Thats horrific.....My sister tried to convince the school to go with school uniforms only but most of the mothers kicked up about it and insisted on the whole dress thing..
