Has anyone ever used chimney fans to assist the draw and overall performance of a chimney?

Chimney fans are never a good solution, you need to identify the underlying issue with your chimney, usually poor ventilation to the room

Thanks DGOBS. Have done a bit more research on them and am not going down that road! We have 100mm wall vents in all rooms with chimneys.

We had problems with our chimney and tried different cowls, none of which were any good.Plenty ventilation in the room.
We ended up buying an electric fan on the net from england. It is wired up to a speed switch,so you can adjust the draught to suit depending on the day.It is agood job although on full speed,a lot of the heat can go up the chimney.
If my memory is right I think it cost approx £700 stg.Google electric chimney fans

You masy have been suffering due to 'flue reversal' did any engineer take a look at it before you installed the fan?

I am assuming that it is a solid fuel fire you are taking about
