Chairman of Bus Eireann based in Dubai as first major strike looms!

There needs to be complete liberalisation of the bus market.

Total disgarce these people going out on strike.

They have zero regard for the commuter.

And what happens when companies pick and choose routes and ignore some of the 'not profitable' or 'dodgy' routes?

What about the commuter then?

That has happened already. Bus Eireann only travel routes where they make money. They have no problem dropping unprofitable routes.

With the chairman working in Dubai there was no issue. However, now that a full blown strike is underway maybe he should return?

All strikes are a disgrace (if they affect you).

There has been very little by way of industrial unrest in the last 20 years or so. I think that will be changing soon.

Any chance of a bit of detail on your first sentence? It's a nice little slogan but what do you actually mean by it?

Do you mean that no-one should be paid a subsidy to operate loss-making routes? Or that the subsidy should be open to other operators and that the BE subsidised routes should be tendered?

No they've dropped routes that were losing huge amounts of money and kept the ones that weren't losing as much money, perhaps trying to get better value for their subsidy.

the bus market was said, not Bus Eireann routes. Dublin Bus for example operate on loss making routes.

Not usually one to defend strike action but did the board and management of Bus Eireann really try and implement payroll cost saving measures without taking a hit themselves?? And it takes a strike for the unfairness of this to be recognised?

It's like Aer Lingus. Reading recently how executive pay was rising while there is still a pay freeze in operation for normal workers. Not left wing by nature but good to see nothing has changed with the crisis. The few will always look after themselves.

Very easy to get the private sector to do unprofitable routes:
Tender for who will do it for the lowest amount - or the most economically advantageous offer.
