Friend's car was broken into recently and has since been with a small local garage while they waited for ordered parts. It was secured and parked on the road outside the garage but has now been stolen. The police have been advised but she doesn't know how to proceed as she doesn't know who's responsible - should she contact her insurers or will they say its the garage's responsibility. not sure what insurance this garage has... She would obvoiusly like to get the value of the car back. Any advice / ideas would be appreciated

If the vehicle was parked in a lock-up of some description, then the garage would be responsible but, since the vehicle was parked on the road - the only way to get recompense is to claim from your own insurance. You must formerly report the theft to the gardai, your insurance company won't pay out otherwise - there is usually a delay in paying out for theft claims of 21 days, (just in case its found) and then the claim will be settled with the book value or the sum insured which ever is the lesser, obviously having proof of a current NCT, receipts for alloys etc can bump up the value. What sort of car was it?

Still kinof up in the air. The car has been found but in the pound at moment. Friend tolk her insurers and reported to the gardi. Waiting to see the condition of the car before she proceeds. Thanks for help.

If she left it up to the garage, and it was in their custody and/or control they would be liable and their insurance company should pay out depending on the cover they have. But even if they didnt have cover, they would still be liable!
