Regarding this: barclayswealth.com/international/savings/short-medium-savings-category/new-client-term-deposit.htm

They offer the possibility to open savings accounts in Euro, USD and £££ ....if I decide, just to diversify, to open a saving account in USD, would banks rip me off when converting the money from USD into Euro and viceversa on the way back or the charge will be minimal? I don't want to lose 5% or more in exchange rate....

I guess I should check with Bank Of Ireland as they would be the sender, correct?

Thank you.

I may be wrong on this but I think Barclays Wealth need a statement from your accountant that you have 5m in assets before they will take you on as a client. We all have that, right??!!

Nearly there, just a few zeros away :)

If you check the link though this does not seem to be the case for these accounts, they are normal deposit and savings accounts.

PS: I can't post full link because I have less than 15 post but if you copy/paste you see ;)

Could you use currency.com or similar to transfer your money through, previous posts would suggest they have a better currency exchange rate and as far as I am aware they transfer funds by electronic transfer.

Is this the BOI exchange rate if I ship USD to another bank or would there be a spread between bid and offer?

treasuryspecialists.com

For a 50k USD transfer today I see what would required 37.5k €, how much of these would be lost in exchange rate?

dont know anything about barclays but hsbc completley screw you on currency transfers , i foolishly allowed them to make the switch from euro to sterling when i opened an account in northern ireland , i should have gotten BOI to switch to sterling before they transfered it

on that day BOI were offering 83 pence to the euro , hsbc gave me 79 pence , i lost several hundred euro , that was ten days ago , even with the fall in the euro v sterling , im still not back to where i started

check out transfermate.com if you want a good rate on FX. They have an office on Dame Street. I haven't used them yet but was planning to at some point as they seem to offer a very competitive rate and allow you to prebook a rate for a period of days once you lodge a min amout of the funds in a trading a/c. I haven't fully looked into them yet nor did I get around to discussing them with the financial regulator's office which i plan to before sending any of my money thru them.

looks good on the surface though
