Are all term policies subject to a medical (for a 50 yr old smoker) in this particular case or is there a 'free cover limit' as mentioned here

Have got online quotes for cover of 50k x 25yrs, approx €40 a month.

No not all term policies are subject to a medical for a 50 year old. However, if you have a medical condition and / or if the amount of cover you are requesting is over a certain limit (which differes between companies) then the insurer reserves the right to request a medical.
