The Commission for Energy Regulation has approved an 8.5% rise in residential gas prices for Bord Gáis to come into effect in October.

Yes, BG even got more of an increase than they applied for. Good old CER. During the blitz they said London can take it. Methinks I shall reduce my gas consumption.

Switch to Flogas - yes they will put up prices also but will still be cheaper then Bord Gais Energy.

why can't we find a huge gas field or even an oil one like clever John Ross on Dallas last night.

True but I wouldn't rely on this bailing us all out, and the country won't benefit for some years yet anyway. Meantime 'cough up' folks, do your patriotic duty how ever hard it hurts.

THERE is more and better quality oil off the coast of Cork than previously thought, explorer Providence Resources said today, adding it was looking for partners in a move that could lead to the country’s first commercial oil production.
Providence hiked its estimate of oil reserves at its flagship Barryroe project off the coast near Cork to as much as 1.6 billion barrels.
The group said it would now work to calculate how much of the oil can be extracted and start talks with potential partners, though any production is likely to be years away.
"Putting out this new oil-in-place figure ... is really the starting point for future discussions," Chief Executive Tony O'Reilly said.
"By the end of the year we'll be actively going out into the market, if the market hasn't already come to us," he said, pointing to [broken link removed]'s $1bn partnership deal a fortnight ago with Rockhopper in the [broken link removed] as an encouraging sign.
Providence said oil in place at the wells stood in a range of 1 to 1.6 billion barrels, against 373 to 893 million in previous estimates provided by third-party specialists.

Why would they be given more than they asked for, that makes no sense whatsoever, that's the equivalent of me going to buy a car,the sticker price is 30k and I tell the salesman I will give him 33k???

Is this just another useless quango?

Sounds like it then lets get rid of it because its plainly not fit for purpose.

It seems incredible that they would be granted an increase greater than what they asked for.

Is there a link to confirm this?

Bord Gais asked for a 7.4pc rise, but today the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) allowed the company to apply an 8.5pc rise.

I really am failing to understand what they are at,this isn't the first time either, whats the point in having a regulatory body like CER,just leave the utility companies charge what they want,..it would work out cheaper for us without them "regulating"

Page 15 in the following report [broken link removed] shows that gas prices for 2011 (OK a little out of date) in Ireland were actually towards the bottom of the table of European countries and below the average cost. I always assumed that gas prices here were higher...Does anyone have any other official links?
