Wooden Sash windows

Had a quote there for 8 wooden sash windows the full monty - double glazed, K-glass, draught seal, painted, weights, brass catches and lifts, supplied and fitted....€9K (With VAT comes to €10.5K) Reputable company excellent to deal with very professional. The windows we currently have are the same style single glazed (we have shutters) seen better days.
Reasons for replacing:
Firstly for a safety point of view (we have young kids it's a 3-storey house and the single glaze doesn't inspire confidence. Kids can actually stand on the window sill inside and the potential for an accident is there).
Secondly, insulation and all that goes with that.
Thirdly, it's in keeping with a period house (don't want PVC).
After putting it in context I have 2 questions:
1. Does that quote appear OK?
2. I'm thinking our current windows once removed may be of some value to the antique/scrap yard dealers. Is it possible for these windows to come out in one piece or am I dreaming?

If your existing windows are in the Georgian style i.e. 6 or 9 panels with thin mullions, double glazed replacements are never going to look the same as the new mullions have to be thicker to accomodate the thicker glass panel. Also, you may have some original glass at the moment which would be a great shame to lose.

Restoration of your existing windows is usually the best option, even if they seem in bad shape now. I know W. & J. Bolger do restoration of existing windows combined with the Ventrolla draught-exclusion system as well as replacement windows so it could be worth talking to them to see if restoration is an option for you.

No connection to Bolgers, they just seem to be well-regarded.

Price seems very reasonable, Look for a better grade of glass - "K" now quiet outdated, better grades available for same price.

Yes, circle is correct, if georgian type, unless georgian mullionis "stick on" the mullion will be much heavier. Double check if "stuck on" that there is a bar inside the D/G unit which prevents you seeing where the mullion is glued on!

Sashes should come out in one piece but maybe not the box. Worth looking at getting windows refurbished.

You are right, nothing like the traditional sash window!

I've already posted a recommendation on WJ Bolger in the past, they specialise in this area and your windows may not be as bad as you think. It's certainly worth investigating...

I have used an ex Bolger employee called Philip Kennedy 087 681 6900 for renovating Sash Windows. Did an excellent job. Came when he said he would. And fixed up a few snags afterwards. I think I got a quote from Bolgers as well and he was signifcantly cheaper.

thanks for the replies. Couple of things: the windows we have are 1/1 sash style ventrolla system. A couple of things re Bolgers - do they cover countrywide? How does refurbishing work? They obviously have to take your windows away or is it an on-site thing? If we did refurbish I'd still be left with single glaze. Insulation wise this probably ain't the best. On the glass thing - yes the original glass is there but the safety aspect is the one that concerns me most. The glass just doesn't appear that it could withstand some childrens horseplay. As I said in the OP in a 3 storey house the potential for a fall is there for mischievious kids.

1. I got the ventrolla/Bolgers windows done. Generally they work well but it seemed over priced.
2. They can repair & restore more than you think and they will also make new frames.
3. They will do all the work on site in 2 to 4 days. The disruption is not too bad.
4. We had non-breakable glass fitted a year after the restoration. No problem in doing this.
5. As far as I know they are very busy and you could wait months for the job to be done.

You have no mullion problem so, If it was me I would go the original route with new double glazed windows with a "Low-E" glass and Toughened Glass to bottom sashes.

As I said previously, the quote seems to be ok!

dewsbury do you know off hand if Bolgers work down the country? I'm about 20K outside cork city. I've no problem waiting as we're in the house a few years at this stage - another 4-5 months is no bother. Brendan thanks will try Philip Kennedy too and see if he can quote me.

There was someone in the kerry area restoring sash windows, sorry don't know the name. They had a large artic-lorry which came to your house and they were able to repair on site. I'm sure they are still in business as they travelled all over the country.
