Wooden beams on kitchen ceiling

Am considering putting wooden beams on an 8ft kitchen ceiling of newbuild (6m X 4M)

A friend of mine did it by forming hollow beam.

He simply formed a beam by joining 4 inch x 1 inch lengths of red deal
(100mm X 25mm).

It looks like solid beams and I am sure its much cheaper.

Has anyone done something like this and what wood did they use

maybe there is there a smarter way of doing it ?

Why would you want to do it all?

We used solid oak beams restored, had to get pillars built into walls to support the weight of the beams. They look fantastic, everybody comments on them and they create a real homely feel, really suit a country kitchen style.
I don't know about doing it the way you mentioned, my thoughts are, if you are going to do some feature like this, best to spend and do it the right way. Nothing worse than cheap imitations. Features are such because they are the main 'feature' in a room. The wow factor.

Another thing to consider is whether beams are appropriate to the house. Given that it's a new build, is it built in an old style or a modern one? If the latter, then I would suggest that beams would be inappropriate.

Ours is a new build and we have old features. (Picture rail, tonge & groove wainscot)

I would think about it, but if it's what you want then go ahead and do it.

Old houses (when done properly) can be beautiful with modern interiors, and vice versa.

I suppose it's all down to personal taste, and doing the best job possible.

If you decide to go with the wooden beams have a look in local phonebook for lumber yards. You might get suitable timber there for a good price.
