Set up is a 7mb Broadband connection in home office, Netgear wireless router.

However in a long two storey house, the distance room where I want to use laptop, cannot maintain a wire less connection. Have tried different laptops, no better. Its is 3 meters up a pprox 20 meters from router.

Timber frame house, but has steel beam in line with intended room.

Have tried a N class router but no improvement

Any suggestions as to how to distribute signal better. .

neat - move the telephone point nearer to the room in question.
not neat - use a longer telephone lead from the router to the socket in the wall and move the rounter nearer to the room in question.
not neat. forget wireless and get a 20m LAN cable from the laptop to the router.

Use a pair of power line ethernet adapters to bring the internet connection to the other end of your house and add another wireless access point there.

Draft N equipment would need to be in use both on the router and the network adapter to provide benefit and the cheaper variants only use two aerials so don't provide the full benefit. Full benefit is only derived from 3 or 4 aerial systems but these are not cheap (in fact 4 aerial systems don't seem to be available anywhere, although it is supported in the draft standard).
