Windows vista documents

I bought a lap top in June with windows vista installed. However whenever I try to email word documents to friends as an attachement, they either cann't open them or are a jumbled up version of letters.

What am I doing wrong - never had this problem before. thanks for any assistance
 
You are probably using Works in Vista, which has its own document format. You need to load the document and then select 'save as' and then select the format required ie word 2003 or whatever. Its in a drop down box.
Then send this document and it will be fine.
 
hi there is a file that you can send with the word doc that you send to your friends that don't have new versions, i got it from the office website when i downloaded the programme.
 
It comes with word alright, when buying from I requested it. I don't think the layout of it is very user friendly actually.

I tried the same as 2003 last night, thanks for that, and my friend was able to open the document fine.
