Just sat down this afternoon to watch ET with the kids......was going great until RTE stopped it half way through for the Nuacht ...

It broke up the film and spoiled the experience as it broke it at a pivotal moment.

Why do they do this ??

GRRR!!

It is most annoying! You expect it with the soaps but films should run without any breaks. It spoils the movie experience when they break for a bloody ad every 20 minutes:mad:

Don't bother with RTÉ. If you want to watch a film, just rent one instead. You get to see what you want, when you want with no ad breaks or other interruptions.

For €150 (or whatever the licence fee is), you could hire 30 DVDs a year. More than 2 a month.

In oz a few years ago one of the channels showed braveheart over 2 nights to fit in as many ad breaks as possible - god help us if they ever want to screen lord of the rings...

Can you legally have a TV without a licence?

Breaks in films are annoying enough, but what about mid-scene or indeed mid-sentence breaks that regularly occur - do they make ANY effort at all to fit the breaks into a logical place in the film/program?

I don't have a TV. Just a projector and DVD player, neither of which have a tuner.
You could also just use a monitor.

doesn't really address the issue of watching TV series, especially where boxsets can be a year behind, and illegal downloading is a no-no.

In New Zealand, they increase the frequency of the ad breaks as the film goes on, presumably on the assumption that they reckon you are committed to the film and are less likely to switch over.

Anyone tried to watch a film on TV3? They seem to do the same as the NZ example above.

The satellite channels on Sky are much worse.

I was watching a prog on Discovery about an asteroid crashing to Earth - The opening scene and credits took 4 minutes, then went for an ad break lasting 9 minutes !!

They probably wanted to get the adds in before the asteroid hit :D
