Who is legally entitled to take photos plus fingerprints?

Does anyone know who in Ireland is legally allowed to ask for your fingerprints and photo as a requirement to joining a 'club'. In this case my local town casino? Surely there are huge privacy issues with this as you have no way of knowing where the information is going?

I would imagine that photo ID is a common enough requirement for membership of private clubs; fingerprints are not. Why not explain your misgivings to the management and say that you won't be joining if they insist on this?

I doubt it is any more illegal than asking for and storing your name, address, cc details etc. They are doing it with your knowledge and permission (if you decide to join of course!). The protection afforded would be, I assume, the same as that afforded to any of your details recorded, it would come under the Data Protection legislation. So they would need you consent in some way to pass your data on, they would have a duty of care to your data and would have to show you all data held by them at your request and remove it from their database at your request.

Can't see that there's anything stopping anybody asking for such info. Obviously you can simply decline if you don't like it. I guess that they would be subject to the normal data privacy laws in relation to storage and dissemination of such data?

In reality this wouldn't give me much confidence, as Data Protection Legislation is hardly enforced in any great manner. Even in you could prove the details we sold, made available to unscrupulous persons could not be returned

I did decline on the night though, and I just thought it a bit extreme thats all. Especially having been in many 'proper' casinos in various other countries without such requirements.

I just wanted to see if they were legally within their right to demand this for membership, 'under data protection legislation' thats all.

Maybe I am just too protective of my personals?

I see where you are coming from and it is a little unsual, although I have heard some stories about using bio-id for access to clubs as a sort of a VIP sign in thing, think it is mostly at the gimmick stage. However, honestly I would be more concerned about them sharing my name, address, or details of financial instruments as it is far easier for unscrupulous people to use this information!

dermot desonds place in dublin does that, swipe of your card & put your finger on the reader and you're in, hassle free, biometric security is something that is going to become much more common in the years to common, look at the think pads (ibm laptops) using fingerprint swipes...
