Hi, I am looking to get a new wireless house alarm (3 bed semi) installed and there does seem to be a fair few systems out there. Anyone got any comments on good systems versus systems to avoid? Some of the names I have seen are Visonics, Agality, HKC, Aritech, Astech, and many more. Once I have a good brand, I can look for an installer. So, ones to recommend OR avoid???

Would you not get a reputable alarm company/installer first and then talk to them about the options? All types of systems out there so really you need an expert to advise.

My advice is to consider what features you would like in a system first and then see whats available. I recommend getting one with a GSM box attached, this means you can contact the alarm, switch it on/off remotely using your phone (very handy if for example you need to let a tradesperson in while no one is there or a cleaner, for example), it will contact you if your alarm is activated, you can check on the alarm status at any time. A fantastic feature.

It's possible to get a lot more, online access, ability to connect to internal and external lights, etc - it really depends on your budget. The GSM box though is fantastic particularly if you are away from the house a lot or the house is idle during the day.

Most installers will only work with one or two brands. Familiarity makes installs easier and quicker. Your best bet is to find a few reputable suppliers, get receommendations you trust if possible and remember, they must be PSA registered. Talk to these suppliers about your needs and decide who is providing the best solution / value.

Not looking for anything fancy, so a standard unit with 2 pirs and 12 contacts, plus gsm. All installers will recommend what they sell. I would prefer to have a good system badly installed than a crap sustem expertly installed, the first scenario is easily rectified, the second is not. I therefore want to at least rule out any rubbish systems.

I installed a wireless Visonic Powermax approx 4 years back and have to say it's a good system and have had no issues with it. Cost €800 at the time for a standard 3 bed semi.

I didn't go with the maintenance as I replace any spent batteries myself (2 so far) needless to say the supplier/installer wasn't pleased
