We live in an old house. and need to have the gas boiler replaced we are confused about whether to go for a standard boiler or a condensor boiler.
If we go for standard which make is the best? If we go for condensor is it easy to get someone to service it?

It would be totally crazy to go for a standard boiler.
Get the best (most efficient) condensing boiler you can possibly afford!
The place you buy the boiler should organise the servicing which will probably only be every couple of years anyway. You can check the models you are thinking of buying on the www.sedbuk.com database to see how efficient they are before going ahead.
Gas is not going to get cheaper - be efficient how you burn it!!

Miss Woo, I'm in a similar position, have decided that a condensor boiler makes most sense. In the UK it has actually been mandatory (with few exceptions) to install a high efficiency condensor boiler since 1st April 2005.
As usual we are several years behind here in good old Ireland :-(
You can buy condensor gas boilers directly from www.rvr.ie or www.heatmerchants.ie (note: I'm not affiliated with either site, nor am I recommending either supplier).
The biggest problem I'm having is finding someone who can actually install one. I've had two registered installers call out so far, neither of which seemed to be interested in installing a condensor boiler. They were more or less saying 'but why would you want one of those?'
I don't understand why.
BTW, according to the Bord Gais website it looks like condensor boilers cost more to service:"Specialist products such as combination or condensing boilers will cost from €160 to service."

Had my heating upgraded last month and spoke to three different installers-2 of them on Bord Gais approved list.I also wanted a condenser boiler but was talked out of it (baffled with techie speak) by these guys. One said he would not intall a condenser boiler into an existing system. He said u build the system around these boilers. They seem to be aware of problems with these things when put into older systems and convinced me it was a bad idea.
Finally went for a Gloworm Micron which is I am told is 75-80% efficient.
Its is a big improvement on what we had-can get decent heat in rads in around 20 mins. The old boiler seemed to struggle for an hour or more to do this.
BTW when I asked Bord Gais about probelms with condensers-I was told-"we are not aware of any issues with these"
