Where to stay in Bordeaux?

I am doing a search for somewhere to stay in Bordeaux in June/July. Basically I am looking for an apartment/house that is relatively central i.e. within walkable distance to all restaurants/shops/etc. but not just directly in the middle of all the activity. Can anybody recommend what area within Bordeaux I should narrown my search down to.
