Where to put sunroom?

In planning stage of new house, the back of the house will be east facing, a neighbour has his sunroom on the south of the house and then the patio leading out to the back garden from this, so it gets sun all day. But we have been advised to put it on the north of the house because it will get sun in the evening and have the patio the same.

The south of our house will face into the side of the neighbours, but on the north there is no neighbours.

I think the shadow of the sunroom will be cast over the patio in either case.

Has anyone got any opinions on this??, thanks.

no, not on the north... thats bad advice.

if the back of your house faces east, then one gable end will face south, which is perfect for the sun room.

believe it or not theres nearly 90 degs of difference between where the sun sets at mid summer versus mid winter..... theres no point getting sun at 8.00 on the evening of 21 june if you dont get it for the most of the rest of the year....

the shadow at aftenoon / evening is thrown north - eastwards....

definitely on the south face.....

dont worry about neighbours, you can always erect a 2.0 m high boundary if you are afraid of any overlooking....

Pop along to Sketchup website and get yourself the free package. In two minutes you could create the basic blocks of your house. Then turn on the shadow function, input your location and watch the shadows created before your eyes throughout the day and the year by the software.
