Where to get cheap Water Butt.

Can someone advise me as to what size of water butt I might need to get to collect water from my drainpipe. Also anywhere I might pick one up cheap as they seem very expensive to purchase. Is there a problem with flies/mosquitoes if I don't use the collected water regularly?
 
Only you can know how much water you're likely to use, and thus determine the size required. Once full, further rain water will flow to the drain, so you won't get overflow issues.

If you're in Dublin, the [broken link removed] supply them for €40, these are 190l. They'll have a lid, so flies, etc., won't be a problem.

Thanks Leo. I live in DunLaoghaire Rathdown Co.Co but I can head down to Ringsend and suss out what they have on offer there. €40 is about the cheapest that I have seen. I really only want them for watering our fledgling vegetable patch, flower beds, wash the car type of thing. Mainly during the summer months. I would love a way to be able to store winter rain but I believe that this involves putting a huge tank underground. Not feasible for a suburban garden.
 
Are these things easy to install. Do I cut a chunk out of my pipe or do I just drill a hole in to the side of my pipe and insert a collector. I assume that not all water that is coming down the pipe is directed to the water butt?

Yes, very straightforward DIY task. Assuming you get one with a diverter kit, you'll cut a small section from the existing downpipe and attach the diverter. This will divert most/all the water from the downpipe to the butt until such time as the butt is full. Then water will continue to flow down the downpipe to the drain.
 
I have a square downpipe rather than a round one. Do I have to look for a diverter kit with a square attachment?
 
Most diverters will handle both, just check the details. For example, the Dublin Coucil one 'fits a standard 68 millimetre (mm)-round and 65mm-square plastic drainpipe."
