When were Driving Tests introduced?

Would anyone be able to tell me when the Driving Test was introduced? Was it the mid 60's.

I think it was 1966, I remember just missing out on a full licence because my birthday was in November.

My parents and other half didn't have to do the test. For my other half he got a 'free' licence, must have been in the 70's or 80's.
