When to get a balancing statement ?

This year my wife took the summer off work (3 mths unpaid parental leave).
I suspect we might overpay tax this year as a result. When is the best time to ask for a balancing statement from Revenue ? I'm guessing January 2006 ?
We are both PAYE victims.

my wife will be on maternity leave for rest of year and as thats tax free what we did was to ring revenue and transfer her unused credits and standard rate allowance to me...hence we got the money back in my next pay cheque.
