When do you need an NCT

I know that cars over 4 years old require an NCT - are you unable to tax a car that does not have an NCT cert or is failure to have an NCT a garda offence only.

The reason I ask is for example if I had a car due for NCT in Oct 07 and when renewing the tax in Oct 06 renewed for 9 months and in Aug 07 then taxed it for a year will this mean not having to get an NCT done until Aug 08 instead of Oct 07 ?
 
No matter when you get your nct done it will be backdated to the time it was due so there is no advantage in putting it off

A garda pulled up a neighbour for not having a NCT.
He said it was a 5 point offence.
Seems harsh so be warned.

you don't need your nct cert to tax a your private car anymore. they took out that requirement a couple of years ago.
