WhatsApp - deleting unwanted messages from one user

A WhatsApp group of which I am an admin is regularly spammed (you tube links / images / GIFs & the like) by one person who clearly thinks they are being helpful.

Rather like folks in the 90s forwarded on endless warning emails on viruses.

A quiet word hasn't helped, deleting messages has caused umbrage, I can't kick them off (though sorely tempted) and leaving myself would be the nuclear option.

What I'd really like is a Gmail type spam filter for WhatsApp; I'd even pay for it at this stage.

Any ideas?

not a viable option in this case, the spam will still be visible in the group

If deleting messages caused umbrage then shadow banning them is probably going to cause even more offence as it would generally be considered worse netiquette than an up-front reprimand or ban.

Try writing a set of rules for the group which covers various issues including a "no links" rule.

Alternatively, just leave the group.

I was in a group that had a strict no msg after 9pm and no chit chat outside the group topic rule. Without fail if someone broke this rule, the admin sent a reminder until people became compliant. And annoyed but still compliant. So I guess like others said above, set up a list of rules and vigorously stick to them. Explain why, in the context of scams and viruses and space being eaten up in galleries that there is a need to keep the chat to its intended purpose.

Try restricting the chat to admin messages only (so, one way traffic) - I had do do that one occasion, with a stern reminder about what the chat was for. Once everyone got the message, I reverted back to allowing others to post

Thanks all.

I think I'm heading in the direction of some time banding (after 9am / before 9pm) & offering an alternative outlet for the non-original content.

Is it critical you hear of something immediately ?You could lock the chat and then check it once every now and then ? This stops you getting notice of showing new messages when you open whatsapp in general

I turn off notifications on my own What's App from 10 pm to 7 am so that when someone gets inspiration at 3 am and wants to share it with everyone else, I don't get to share it until I am ready for it the following day. I think you can exempt certain people from it, so that someone you trust to only What's App you in an emergency at those times, can get through.

And yet you need rules as a basis for moderating behaviour.
The suggestion was to have a second whatsapp group to which the person under discussion was not invited; difficult to see that as an acceptable solution for adults.

As previously stated this individual believes they are being helpful; offering another outlet for the non-original content sharing is a more mature response.
