What's the best kind of garden path?

I want to make a path from the back door to the shed, with a fork about 3/4 of the way down going towards some decking. I was thinking of using some left over decking boards as an edging and making a gravel path. Would this be a bit awkward when I am taking the lawn mower out of the shed ie,will the edging board be a nuasiance?
Has anyone any other simple ideas?

Stone slabs or conc. patio slabs slightly sunk into the ground as stepping stones. Stone is actually quite cheap and worth looking at.

Submerged brick edge - you'll be able to move your lawnmower over it.
