What will become fashionable in a recession?

To partner Welfarite's thread 'What will be unfashionable in a recession?', I'm asking what's going to be the next big thing (not our paychecks, we presume!) now that we're in a recession?

I second the suggestion already made on Welfarite's thread re grow-your-own veg, though if you're as hopeless at it as I am it will be of dubious economic benefit (good mucky fun though)

Other recession 'must haves' include:
Aldi
Lidl
Camping holidays (preferably at home, so combining low cost with low carbon footprint)
Entertaining at home (as opposed to expensive meals out)
DVD rental (as opposed to buying)
Packed lunches
Charity shops
Hand-me-downs (not just clothes (which I remember as a kid) but furniture, household items and kids equipment and toys - I'm still using a hand-me-down set of dishes every day)
Library (borrow it instead of buy it)
Cycling/Public transport/walking
Freecylce/Jumbletown/Free Trade (though takers may outnumber givers as time goes on)
Shabby chic/Minimalism
Rescue mutts instead of pedigree pooches (avoiding the conspicuous consumption and dubious ethics of pedigrees while giving a homeless mutt a home)
...

Interesting to note that most of the 'frugal' choices are also 'green' choices.

Multicoloured shellsuits.
"The social".
Supermarket value ranges.
Collecting coupons.
TV programmes such as "Pennywise" will replace property programmes.
Daytime TV.
Public service jobs.
Homebrew kits.

Popularity of Ebay should increase - both for buying and selling.

The 2nd hand independent car sellers may do brisk business.

aircoach instead of taxi's to airport
matinee concerts/plays
early bird menu's in restaurants
RTE 1 & 2 - sure we never needed all those fancy channels!
Arnotts instead of BT's
cycling/joggining/power walking instead of gyms
nescaffe
going to church (always seem more popular in recessions)

Local bingo halls may see a revival, bored unemployed youth forming bands, strip groups etc (ok so i'm thinking Committements and Full monty)??, scramble by students for any saturday part-time jobs available. Arty student style of dress - no labels etc

Speaking of students reminded me of Fosters Dollars - tokens you collected to claim a free pint of Fosters (which begs the question, why?!)

So I'll add clipping coupons and other money-saving promotions

Farming in the west of Ireland

The Real Santa Claus

Home-brew Dandelion Wine

Penny Pitching

Religion, church on Sunday

People turn to religion in times of hardship, when they're sick or when they're downtrodden. You'd never know, the Catholic church might make a power comeback......

Of course it would mean another method of free socialising (church on a sunday) and instead of paying expensive psychiatrist fees one could just sit in the confessional and talk about ones 'bad' thoughts

How about that common phrase of the 80's heard echoing through all the building sites with the high level of tradesmen out of work.......'Any chance of a start?'

Something very popular already....

People who can't tell the difference between a 1/2 % drop in the economy and 1983....
