what type of vauxhall astra?

I am thinking on bringing a 08 vauxhall astra hatchback out of northern ireland, as i am girl havent clue about engines, which is the best? i have a 1.4 corolla at min and would like a bit more power, has anyonne the 1.7 diesel, was thinking on the 1.6 petrol as vrt not too bad?? can any one help? also what colour, black, silver or white??
