What to pay a carer

A casual friend has stayed with my elderly father for a day and overnight. It was for safety for him. I want to give enough that they are happy but not so much that they get embarrassed. Does anybody know the rates for this type of caring.

If you were to hire a private company like HomeInstead they would charge a minimum of 6 hours at a rate of €34/hour (Monday-Friday) or €41/hour (Saturday and Sunday). This would included personal care if needed.

If you were to hire a carer directly yourself, they might charge around €20/hour for a single hour, not sure how much for a full day and overnight.

Maybe give your friend a voucher of €150?

Thank you for that information. It’s really helpful. I was never in this situation before now.

Please be careful. If this was a once-off then well and good but if its to be an ongoing arrangement then you are becoming an employer with all that that implies, tax, insurance, etc.
