What rent should I pay?

I've finally decided not to apply for a mortgage until at least next year. In the meantime, I fancy living on my own for a while in a house (not an apartment) in south Dublin.

I've looked at some houses but the average rent seems to be €1,000 and upwards. It still seems like a great deal of money. Are there cheaper houses available?

It's important to note that these are asking prices, same with purchasing, they're a starting point.

I'm going to look at a three-bed in Dundrum next week. Asking price is Euro 1,000 per month. The owner doesn't sound like she's in the mood for bargaining. The all seem to expect to get the advertised price. Then again, I'm not great at haggling. Maybe I should learn...

Look, haggle, walk away if necessary.

Plenty of choice out there.
Plenty of choice but 1k still doesnt go far in south Dublin when it comes to houses where the OP is looking. Student rents are still in the 300-400 region. So any ramshackle 3 bed in decent commuting distance of a uni can probably command over 1k if the rooms are let separately. This puts a floor on rents and makes it tough for people like OP looking to rent alone.
